Maine Bear Hunts

Maine's Black Bear are buried deep in the snow  & Ice right now. 2+ feet in the woods with a 6" layer of ice somewhere near the middle. They went to bed late in our area because of the bumper crop acorns we had. I was seeing fresh Bear tracks in the snows of late November.  Hopefully they dug in before the storms of December. I also hope not too many Grouse got trapped Under the layer of hard crust. There's a few that strut across my driveway through the woods each day causing a massive dog point  in the windows from whichever of the 7 Pointers in the house were privy to the crossing.

This motley crew in the picture is from our Wounded warrior week. Great guys, Great time...We are planning another SOWW event probably 4th week next year. Next year's season starts on the 25th of August so the first week again is entirely in August just like last year.

Here are some important links to web sites fighting the U.S. Humane Societies attack on Maine hunting of Bear.

What these people don't understand or care about is that an over population of any species is a BAD thing for the animals. Mother Natures way of dealing with it is much more cruel than hunting is.

Please look at these sites, and share them with your hunting friends. Maine now, could be your state next. We need the support from sportsmen and women across the country to defeat this battle.

6 NOV 2013

Well I took the morning off from Whitetail hunting long enough to finally write our 2013 Bear result blog. I had to wait to hear back from all the hunters I had e-mailed asking how many bears each of them saw while on stand. It took a while to get replies from all of them. I usually keep better notes but I missed a few days and did not have all the stats.

We had a fantastic group this year with many new hunters coming. All of them say they will be back next season.

The final tally: 38 hunters saw a total of 116 bears! Out of the 38...18 killed, 6 passed on shootable bears, 4 missed completely, 3 wounded, 5 saw bears that were too small and 2 saw no bears. One hunter saw 13 from his stand before he took a nice 200 pounder.

The biggest bear taken was 305 lbs.

Back home for a couple days of guiding fishermen. My boss ( wife ) the slave driver won't let me make the transition totally from fishing to bear just yet. Not too worry, baits are being tended on schedule and they are as usual, smoking hot ! Those of you who know Johnny Reb, he is up for a month or more and is staying at the lodge. He is a big help in getting ready for a very busy season.

Weeks one and two are fully booked. Week 3 is close to being so and we have a few hunters plus a wounded warrior hunt for 3 Special Ops heroes week four. Check out SOWW's website. Also like their Facebook page

Headed back up for the night to do tomorrows bait run.

The above pic is of a very nice bruin visiting one of our sites. Maybe you'll be the lucky one to draw this bait site out of the hat.

All baits are baited and half of them have stands up. I will be off guiding on a 3 day fish in Grand Lake Stream, and will hit them all again upon my return. Will also put up the rest of the stands next week. Re-visited 2 of the sites yesterday after only a couple days post baiting and one of the two had been cleaned up already. Anyone want to guess which bait?

To all my 2013 Bear hunters. If you haven't gotten back your question sheet to us, please do so asap. The most important info on there that I need to know is how many left handed shooters I have.

We are inviting SOWW to come up with 3 Wounded Warriors 4th week. We are very excited about this hunt.

SPRING BEAR SCOUTING

SPRING BEAR SCOUTING

Well like I said in a previous blog last week, lots of new territory...

Last Monday, I spent most of the day scouting a good chunck of the vast new area we aquired this year. I found some good spots that I'm pretty happy with. I pobably have 1/3 of the scouting done that I need to do.

2013 BEAR UPDATE

2013 BEAR UPDATE

16 MAY 2013

Lots to talk about for 2013 Bear season...

First of all, we have lot's of new territory again this year. I have my work cut out for me this Spring and Summer scouting out thousands of acres of new area Eagle Mountain has picked up. The reason for this is because the private land owner (the paper co.) that we lease our bait sites from has changed things around again regarding the distribution of leases. They are attempting to make it so there are fewer outfitters crowded in any one area. A problem I never had to begin with, but really a good thing all around.

A couple years ago another guide and friend, who has bait sites far from his base of ops and close to mine, had discussed the idea of swapping some of our territories. Since I also had sites that were close to him and far from me, It made sense for us to make a trade. Well this year with the changes the paper company incorporated, it made even more sense, so we made the swap.
