Maine Bear Hunts

BEAR SEASON 2012 RESULTS

BEAR SEASON 2012 RESULTS

17 SEPT 2012

What a fun and successful season we had this year. Again, as with last year, we would have liked about twice as many hunters as we got but the economy is still in the crapper and many people just can't afford to go on a 6 day Bear hunt. Next year is filling fast already so maybe we'll be able to fill ALL the stands.

We had 12 hunters this year all of whom had an opportunity at a bear! of the 12 we harvested 8 nice Bear. 2 Wounded and 2 opted not to take the shot.. 5 of the 8 harvested were over 200 lbs.

BEAR UPDATE

20 AUGUST 2012

Not much to say when the baits are so hot that bears are coming in on me before I even leave the site. My guide Brett and I baited them all again yesterday along with good friend Brian. We double checked all the stands for tightness and we are ready for 1st week hunters. This pic is one of at least 5 bear coming to this bait. All but a couple of the 25 baits have multiple bear visiting. The ones that have just one.....Well that usually means the big boy of that neighborhood.

Week 2 still has room for any last minute hunters......

Hard to think of anything to say about the baits after 2nd run other than wow. All 28 baits are smoking hot and most are being visited by multiple bears. From now  till the opening day of the hunt there is no doubt every bait will be cleaned up each and every time in.

BEAR UPDATE

7 AUGUST 2012

For the 1st time in our history, all but 2 of our baits  were cleaned up on the first return visit ! We knew from the lack of  natural "bear food" in the woods that the Bears would be onto the bait in fast order but never did we imagine just how fast. It is going to be one of the best years to hunt Bear in many years...If you are on the fence about a hunt this year, decide soon. You don't want to miss Bear Season 2012...Still room 2nd & 3rd weeks.

Stay tuned for further updates...

SCOUTING 2012 BEAR SEASON

SCOUTING 2012 BEAR SEASON

20 JULY 2012

I know what you're thinking...That's not a Bear track! Why is Matt putting up a picture of a Moose track on a bear scouting update? Well I'll tell you...Cause it's not a Moose track either. It's a Whitetail Buck track!

I found this track while scouting out a new Bear bait site. The spot was perfect for Bear. Everything you want in a good bait site. Bog, running brook, thick Cedar and Spruce and a major game trail running right through it. This Bucks track was on what we call a Moose run. A beaten down trail that is used by all the big game animals. If you look close, you can see the dew claw marks of a Moose track just ahead of the Bucks.I have to admit I came out of the site more excited about the Buck track than I did about the great new bait site. But that's just me.

Even though fishing season is still keeping us very busy, my mind is gearing towards the the up coming Bear season. We start baiting in just 2 short weeks! A visit yesterday to 10 of the bait sites showed that bears are already checking for food and reports of bear sightings are way up all over Eastern Maine.

2011 Bear season

2011 Bear season

19 Sept 2011

Where to start.... My only regret this year was the lack of hunters. I had the fewest amount of sports that I've had in a long time, only 12. When you run 32 sites and have 32  stands set up, you want to fill them all. Oh well, next year is already starting to fill up so 2012 should be better.

The lack of hunters certainly was not matched by the lack of bears. 1st week, 8 hunters saw 24 bears! We killed 4 and a few nice bears were passed up. The biggest of the week was taken Thursday by Alan Whitter of Massachusetts. Alan made a great shot allowing the big 325 lb boar only 2 steps after he fired before dropping. Good Job Alan...

Opening night 2 nice bear were harvested, one 221 lbs and one 181 lbs. The pic above is of the 221. The 221 was taken by Tommy from Texas and Pete from Holyoke Mass tagged the 181.

bear update

15 Aug 2011

I've been so busy baiting , setting up stands and still continuing to guide fishermen that I have not had time to update here. I have been back to the baits 3 times since my last update. All stands are set up and we are ready for 1st week hunters next Monday.

My prediction about the new Cedar swamp bait being hit on the 1st return proved wrong. Even after 2 more visits, no bear. I still have every confidence because there really is no place in the 38,000 acres I lease that a Bear won't find a donut, it sometimes just takes a little while and we still have 2 weeks before we plan to hunt that area. All the other bait sites are smoking.....

The rest of the week will be too busy to update as we move up to the lodge. My next report will be after the season ends.

Check in later and thanks for reading....

Good hunting,.

Bait site report

Bait site report

13 August 2011

They say third times a charm. That was surely the case yesterday on my 3rd trip back to the baits. All sites are now smoking hot! It was a great day.  I did have a difficult choice to make at one point. One of this years new sites I started hadn't  been hit  yet on my last visit and I decided then that I liked the looks of another spot ( as I drove by )1/2 a mile before the cold site. It was a nice looking cedar swamp with a brook running through it, perfect bear cover so, my plan was to move the new spot I was baiting to here.

I went into the area and looked for a suitable baiting spot. I found a good stand tree and with some pruning  I set up a very nice bait site. I pruned my way out for the walking trail and went back in with a bucket of donuts. I was quite pleased with the whole set up. Most hunters don't realize how much work a bear guide does for the 4 weeks prior to the opening of the season.
