Maine Bear Hunts

2011 Bear season

2011 Bear season

19 Sept 2011

Where to start.... My only regret this year was the lack of hunters. I had the fewest amount of sports that I've had in a long time, only 12. When you run 32 sites and have 32  stands set up, you want to fill them all. Oh well, next year is already starting to fill up so 2012 should be better.

The lack of hunters certainly was not matched by the lack of bears. 1st week, 8 hunters saw 24 bears! We killed 4 and a few nice bears were passed up. The biggest of the week was taken Thursday by Alan Whitter of Massachusetts. Alan made a great shot allowing the big 325 lb boar only 2 steps after he fired before dropping. Good Job Alan...

Opening night 2 nice bear were harvested, one 221 lbs and one 181 lbs. The pic above is of the 221. The 221 was taken by Tommy from Texas and Pete from Holyoke Mass tagged the 181.

bear update

15 Aug 2011

I've been so busy baiting , setting up stands and still continuing to guide fishermen that I have not had time to update here. I have been back to the baits 3 times since my last update. All stands are set up and we are ready for 1st week hunters next Monday.

My prediction about the new Cedar swamp bait being hit on the 1st return proved wrong. Even after 2 more visits, no bear. I still have every confidence because there really is no place in the 38,000 acres I lease that a Bear won't find a donut, it sometimes just takes a little while and we still have 2 weeks before we plan to hunt that area. All the other bait sites are smoking.....

The rest of the week will be too busy to update as we move up to the lodge. My next report will be after the season ends.

Check in later and thanks for reading....

Good hunting,.

Bait site report

Bait site report

13 August 2011

They say third times a charm. That was surely the case yesterday on my 3rd trip back to the baits. All sites are now smoking hot! It was a great day.  I did have a difficult choice to make at one point. One of this years new sites I started hadn't  been hit  yet on my last visit and I decided then that I liked the looks of another spot ( as I drove by )1/2 a mile before the cold site. It was a nice looking cedar swamp with a brook running through it, perfect bear cover so, my plan was to move the new spot I was baiting to here.

I went into the area and looked for a suitable baiting spot. I found a good stand tree and with some pruning  I set up a very nice bait site. I pruned my way out for the walking trail and went back in with a bucket of donuts. I was quite pleased with the whole set up. Most hunters don't realize how much work a bear guide does for the 4 weeks prior to the opening of the season.

Just a quick note before I go guiding fisherman all day.

I hit all 32 baits yesterday...This was my 2nd return after the start of baiting season. The baits 1st trip back were a bit disappointing, but yesterday's visit was very encouraging. More than half the sites are being visited my multiple bears. Now I feel things are back on track with where they should be by this point. I am confident by next trip, at least 90% if not all sites will be hot.

Stay tuned...

Time to feed the bears

Time to feed the bears

1 August 2011

Baiting season kicked off this weekend. On Friday I went alone as I had 5 new sites to scout out and that takes a lot of time out of the day plus I prefer to scout by myself.  You really can't bait 35 sites in one day when you have that many new sites to scout. I like to spend a good amount of time picking out quality spots, plus all the pruning to make shooting lanes takes a while.  So I saved the majority of the baiting for Saturday .

Getting real close to the beginning of pre season baiting. We get 4 weeks to bait prior to the opening of the hunt. I am looking forward to getting back into the Bear Woods and scouting out some new sites again this year.  I have a couple spots in mind that I think will work very well because of their proximity to some of our best sites.

Still room for more hunters, give us a call....
