THE 2011/12 MAINE WINTER

THE 2011/12 MAINE WINTER

3 APRIL 2012

Spring has come early here in the northeast. Maine as with many parts of the country didn't really have a winter this year.. I only plowed my driveway one time all winter! Many people were whining about the lack of snow and cold. Like the Home heating oil companies. I think they have had plenty of profit making years in a row. It was cold enough for the Ski resorts to make snow so they were ok. People who enjoy snowmobiling had to travel a little further north. The Snowshoe hares did have a rough season being bright white on bare ground. :-) Cities and towns saved thousands of dollars in plowing costs but the real beneficiary was the Whitetail Deer herd. For all but a few days here in Eastern Maine we had mostly bare ground all winter. For most of January it was completely bare. That means the deer didn't need to yard up. Best of all, they were able to evade the Coyotes and find food sources normally unavailable. Many Deer survived to see another season. That means hunting will be better than last year. I am hoping we get 2 or 3 more winters just like this one and the herd will be in great shape.

Looking forward to the 2012 season...
