This part of Maine is blessed in that it has countless lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams that provide choices for all levels of paddling activities, fishing, and swimming. Novice paddlers can access several area lakes with sand beaches that offer easy launches, sheltered coves, and inlets that provide protection from the waves and winds of the larger lakes. For more experienced paddlers, there are a number of local systems that are short drives from the lodge that offer a more challenging run, such as the Machias River system. The Machias River is an up to 76 mile wilderness canoe trip with class I, II and III rapids, runnable from headwaters to sea by canoeing from 5th Machias lake to the coastal town of Machias. Canoe trips on the river are runnable from late April to mid June. Drop offs and pick ups can be arranged.
